Friends‘ Association

Creating peace through dialogue between cultures – that is ifa’s task and goal. As part of the German Foreign Cultural and Educational Policy, ifa operates as a cultural mediator and competence centre. In order to be able to successfully fulfill its social mission in the future, ifa requires friends and sponsors who contribute to this preservation through their private and entrepreneurial activities. By becoming a member of the Friends‘ Association, ifa’s commitment to global cultural exchange can be supported and secured.

The Friends’ Association was founded on 8 November 2006 with the aim of supporting ifa in its continual commitment as cultural mediator and competence centre. One of the most important projects is the awarding of the Theodor Wanner Award, named after the founder of ifa which was then called the German Foreign Institute.

The prize honours people and organisations who contribute to the dialogue of cultures with outstanding commitment. Winners in recent years were the human rights organisation Human Rights Watch, the poet, theologian and freedom fighter Ernesto Cardenal, the former President of the European Commission, the former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Carla del Ponte and the conductor Daniel Barenboim.
