Reset Europe: When, if not now?

CULTURE REPORT - PROGRESS EUROPE 2020 release on the occasion of Europe Day

Stuttgart/Berlin, 5 May 2020 - Solidarity in Europe, particularly in the European Union, is fragile, as shown by the numerous recent crises – first the financial and debt crisis, then the refugee crisis, and now, hitting especially hard, the Corona crisis. What can be done to curb EU scepticism, fake news, and polarisation? Does Europe need a fresh start?

Among other things, Brexit and the false claims preceding it have clearly highlighted the lack of an urgently needed common European public. Can culture ensure more tolerance? More than a few people believe it’s obligated to the task – not as a national retreat, but as an expression of openness to the world and interconnectedness. What role could culture and education play in the process of regaining citizens’ trust? In rekindling the critical, intellectual discussion in Europe? It’s clear: trust requires transparency and democracy needs a reliable factual base in order to make sound decisions. What are the next steps in Europe?

While debates often revolve around the spread of populism, little is said about ways to curb polarisa-tion. The 10th edition of Kulturreport attempts to fill this gap. Among the authors are Aleida and Jan Assmann, Margaret Atwood, Ladislau Dowbor, Francis Fukuyama, Alfred Grosser, Herta Mül-ler, Heribert Prantl, Åsne Seierstad, Ece Temelkuran, Ilija Trojanow, Frank Vogl and Heinrich Au-gust Winkler.
