Thirty years after the reunification of Germany, Two German Architects 1949–1989 takes a look at architecture in the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic, a theme that remains relevant to this day. In the light of present challenges in Germany, this exhibition is being presented to a broad audience.

Numerous models, photographs and plans show the development of architecture during the four decades of German division. They invite comparison and discussion, and permit new perspectives on today’s discourse on architecture. The aim of this project is to highlight commonalities and differences in architecture between 1949 and 1989 in East and West, identifying specific achievements, and avoiding judgement. This is a contribution to understanding between East and West, and in this sense an example of a greater European integration process. This exhibition takes into account the results of research conducted over several years in the Faculty of Architecture at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts, in which curators Simone Hain and Hartmut Frank and many students took part, contributing their own work and models. The exhibition was produced in cooperation with the Federation of Föderation deutschsprachiger Architektursammlungen.
