get off the couch! Housing and Living in Times of Social Transformation

ifa Gallery | Stuttgart | 19.07.2019 – 08.09.2019

Exhibition | The IMIAD Summer School 2019 and the exhibition at ifa Gallery Stuttgart explore the theme of living, today and in the near future. How will a society that is ageing and undergoing significant ethnic transformation provide housing – in a speculative, tight, and ever more expensive housing market, and taking into account our precarious environmental situation that raises the question as how much future we really have? The digitalisation of all areas of life and the ensuing processes of change in urban spaces are great challenges in themselves, demanding that we rethink all the many aspects of urban living in the private and public spheres.

How do we want to be seated? How do we want to sleep? How to eat? Are designer sofas overrated? Can we find new approaches to living environments? Are we willing to reconsider our own conventions and morals? Perhaps the answers to the question as to how we will live tomorrow are more likely to be cultural and less a matter of reinventing housing design. As chance dictates, exactly one hundred years after the foundation of the Bauhaus we are asking a hundred new questions that will lead to at least a thousand new answers.

The IMIAD Summer School 2019 is an international workshop. Students and professors from the International Master of Interior-Architectural Design from India, Turkey, the USA, Switzerland and Germany will spend two weeks working together. The results of this workshop will then form the basis for the exhibition at ifa Gallery Stuttgart, where visitors will be invited to contribute with their own ideas and questions.

In cooperation with the IMIAD study programme at Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart.
