Dipdii Textiles, Bangladesh | Studio Anna Heringer

Dipdii Textiles stands for a range of textiles products made in Bangladesh. They are not just attractive to the eye but also made in a very special way. Each hand-made item is unique and is the result of a participatory production process that is future-oriented, decentralized and based on local textiles traditions. The aim is to create an alternative to mass production and the exploitation of workers in the cities, and to improve the quality of life in the village. The label Dipdii Textiles was initiated by Studio Anna Heringer, the designer Veronika Lena Lang and the charitable local organisation Dipshikha. Worn and used saris are put together in layers to make blankets with unique and lively patterns, and each piece also tells part of a family’s story. Shirts, waistcoats and pillowcases are created in hand-made up-cycling processes, and can be bought in a pop-up store in the exhibition.

The work of architect and project initiator Anna Heringer is characterized by a special sense for form and materials. Heringer is not only interested in implementing her own architectural designs but also in the lives of the future users of her buildings and in the economic and cultural conditions at the places her designs are made for. Women from the village discovered some location plans, floorplans and views of buildings that Anna Heringer and Partners designed in the north of Bangladesh, and they used these as motifs for their textiles products, sewing them onto blankets. These new and unusual representations of architecture are colourful, diverse and sensual – just as the textiles from Rudrapur.
