Algorithms permeate our everyday lives: they capture our attention, filter and generate information, and make decisions for us. The exhibition Dreaming Beyond AI: Portals Behind the Algorithm brings together artistic positions that explore questions around technologies and the power structures embedded within them across different media. The works reveal the colonial structures underlying technological systems, extractivism and biases and develop narratives and imaginaries of care, resistance, and collective becoming beyond what the algorithm prescribes – an act of collective dreaming.
The exhibition brings together works from two residency programs, “In the Loop" and "Coalition Building," which the collective realized in collaboration with the ifa. The works unfold in both digital and physical space – from sound and video to AI-generated images, digital spreadsheet and data logics, and virtual reality.
Dreaming Beyond AI is a multi-disciplinary and collaborative web-based project bringing together artists, researchers, activists, educators and policymakers to create new narratives and visions around AI technologies. Since 2020, the project aims to enable an understanding of the impact AI technologies have on inequity, and a questioning of mainstream AI narratives as well as imposed visions of the future.

The ifa Galleries in Stuttgart and Berlin present contemporary art from a global point of view. The work of the ifa Galleries is based on seeing the world from a diversity and plurality of perspectives, discovering new stories, and shaping emancipatory processes, interactions, and artistic spaces. Our focus is on long-term relationships with artists, partners, and visitors, and our exhibitions and education programmes are developed through practices of collaboration that trace global entanglements and piece them together in new forms of narrative.

With over 20 touring exhibitions currently travelling across the globe and with its diverse event programmes on contemporary art, the ifa links the German art scene with internationally active cultural creators and forms cooperations and networks. The projects, many of which were developed in co-creation with local partners, cover the various disciplines of modern and contemporary fine arts – from current themes in architecture, photography and design to Bauhaus and monographic exhibitions such as Rosemarie Trockel or Marcel Odenbach. These projects generate local meeting platforms and allow international perspectives on topics of global relevance. The ifa also provides loan exhibits to interested museums.
