Contemporary Photographic Interventions

After the successful premiere at the Contemporary Art Museum Guangzhou/China, the double exhibition is now being shown at the G Museum of Art Nanjing/China.

In the interests of fostering a mutually creative cultural and artistic exchange, what is presented in Nanjing expands the core exhibition with five artistic positions from China. In conjunction with curator Chen Rui (b. 1987 in Xuzhou) and museum director Bian Ka (b. 1976 in Shanghai), Christin Müller (b. in Leipzig) selected the following artists who are working in a similar way with the medium of photography: Ge Yulu (b. 1990 in Wuhan), Li Binyuan (b. 1985 in Yongzhou), Dong Wensheng (b. 1970 in Ganyu), Jiang Pengyi (b. 1977 in Yuanjiang) and Zheng Zhiyuan (b. 1977 in Shanghai).

#3 Sebastian Stumpf and #4 Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs

With the works of #3 Sebastian Sumpf and #4 Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, the core exhibition introduces two positions in which performative interventions are central to the artistic work. The artists use the medium of photography and video to comment playfully and sometimes ironically on urban life today and its visual configuration. They engage with the way architectural space expresses society as form, highlighting gaps in the structure of the city, interrogating commonplace sights and making the inconspicuous visible.

Comparing the works of Sebastian Stumpf and Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs reveals different ways of intervening in the image. While Sebastian Stumpf places his own body in relationship to the urban space and landscape, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs work with pyrotechnics and wooden constructions, using the optical laws of perspective to turn these into integral elements of real architectural structures. Approaches like these stand for a broader understanding of photography, film and documentary practice.

The artists explore the limits of their materials in a way that is both subversive and artistic, by creating suspense and illusion through deception and visual trickery – so actually this is the opposite of documentary evidence. In this way they depart from the idea that such an attitude must not rely on any kind of directorial intervention. Rather, the artists stage-manage things to create a trenchant reaction to the world of images surrounding us.

Exhibitions worldwide

With over 20 touring exhibitions currently travelling across the globe and with its diverse event programmes on contemporary art, the ifa links the German art scene with internationally active cultural creators and forms cooperations and networks. The projects, many of which were developed in co-creation with local partners, cover the various disciplines of modern and contemporary fine arts – from current themes in architecture, photography and design to Bauhaus and monographic exhibitions such as Rosemarie Trockel or Wolfgang Tillmans. These projects generate local meeting platforms and allow international perspectives on topics of global relevance. The ifa also provides loan exhibits to interested museums.
