Photography from Germany

The exhibition ‘presentation | representation’ moves between the presentation of the world and an artistic representation of the world. The transition from analogue to digital photography brings with it a new understanding of the credibility of the medium of photography. In their pictures, the photographers of the exhibition reflect this changed situation through a deliberately subjective construction of authenticity. Breaking away from traditional documentation, their works cover the entire range of contemporary photography. The individual invention of image deliberately allows for doubt.

The photographs of the artists, who have lived and worked in West and East Germany, cannot be assigned either to a single region or to a single style. The exhibition documents the increasing importance of the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig alongside the previously dominant Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and Bernd Becher and his students.

The photographers: Laurenz Berges, Albrecht Fuchs, Karin Geiger, Claus Goedicke, Uschi Huber, Matthias Koch, Wiebke Loeper, Nicola Meitzner, Peter Piller and Heidi Specker

Curator

Thomas Weski, born in Hanover in 1953, has been working as a curator for the Foundation for Photography and Media Art with the Michael Schmidt Archive in Berlin since 2015. He was previously curator at various museums and professor of Cultures of the Curatorial at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig.

Exhibitions worldwide

With over 20 touring exhibitions currently travelling across the globe and with its diverse event programmes on contemporary art, the ifa links the German art scene with internationally active cultural creators and forms cooperations and networks. The projects, many of which were developed in co-creation with local partners, cover the various disciplines of modern and contemporary fine arts – from current themes in architecture, photography and design to Bauhaus and monographic exhibitions such as Rosemarie Trockel or Wolfgang Tillmans. These projects generate local meeting platforms and allow international perspectives on topics of global relevance. The ifa also provides loan exhibits to interested museums.
