Two sculptures can be seen leaning forward. The left figure stretches its arms slightly towards the other, the right figure holds its left arm with its right hand. Melancholy, irony, and humour are transversal characteristics of Peter Wächtler's work. Using narrative and, particularly, soliloquy as main tools, the works of the German artist bring us a universe where fantasy, fables, and a certain slant towards existentialism come together in the creation of proposals that explore a radical ambiguity.

Faced with his drawings, sculptures, or films, one often feels a kind of derealisation. As if his characters – coming from another time, in other ways or from other species – would speak better about our little neuroses, disenchantments, and expectations. As if they embody our collective anxiety and point the way to dream, imagination, and allegory as the right paths to a provisional redemption.

The exhibition that Wächtler brings to Culturgest will be the artist's debut at a Portuguese institution and and was supported by ifa's exhibition funding.
