Continuing a long-standing investigation into the “transformative power of plants,” this programme will focus on citrus fruits. Their bitter-sweet flavour and medicinal properties have shaped not only countless recipes and dishes, but also landscapes and imaginations. By tracing this history through a series of iconographic and culinary vignettes, from antiquity to the very contemporary, this conference will show that citrus fruits, their cultivation and marketing, as well as their symbolic appropriation by political powers, have played a key role in two inseparable phenomena: colonization and the destruction of ecosystems. Samir Boumediene is a researcher in the history of knowledge, the arts, and the environment. His book, The Colonization of Knowledge: A History of Medicinal Plants in the New World (1492–1750), published in 2016, focuses on the European appropriation of American medicinal plants.
