Nairy Baghramian has been invited to SLG for a major solo exhibition. For more than twenty years, she has created sculptural works that challenge the viewer's sense of self, space and relationship with things.
Jumbled Alphabet brings together sculptures from the artist's Misfits series, which disrupts the idea that children build toys where the pieces fit together perfectly. Misfits is a celebration of the beauty of things that don't fit, and the creativity that lies in 'misfitting'.
Her sculptures often respond to their surroundings, engaging with architecture and people, using materials such as marble, wood, metal and resin. They also explore connections between art and other creative industries, such as interior design, dance and theatre, using a variety of techniques. While seemingly abstract, they often reference parts of the body, suggesting joints, gestures, limbs, skin and teeth.
These ideas are developed in new hybrid sculptures Baghramian creates in an exchange with other artists. They play with ideas of inheritance and fitting together disparate objects. An evolving drawing made by children visiting the SLG during the exhibition also reflects this spirit of playful collaboration.
