Theatre makers Heidi and Rolf Abderhalden, photographer Claudia Andujar and composer Péter Eötvös will receive the 2018 Goethe Medal, which is awarded annually by the Goethe-Institut to people who are particularly committed to international cultural exchange.

The motto of this year's Goethe Medal is "Life after the catastrophe". The theatre makers Abderhalden and their theatre collective Mapa Teatro deal with the interlinkages of politics, culture, violence and revolution in Colombian society. The photographer and human rights activist Claudia Andujar stands up for the indigenous Yanomami tribe in the Brazilian Amazon. The Hungarian composer and conductor Péter Eötvös has shaped European musical culture since the Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Goethe-Institut President Klaus-Dieter Lehmann will present the award on 28 August in Weimar.
