European identity in a digital world

On 1 July, Austria took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union. A rich cultural programme has been organised for the six-month term. The focal points include the European-level work programme, expert conferences in Austria, and the cultural framework programme in Brussels. The overall aim is to support the cultural diversity of Europe as well as the competitiveness of its cultural and creative sector.

The Austrian Presidency is also focusing on the impact of digitalisation on Europe’s cultural, media and creative economies. "The central question being how to guarantee in future our European identity in the digital world given the market dominance of globally acting American giants," says Gernot Blümel, Austria’s Federal Minister for the EU, Arts, Culture and Media. This is also the key question of the Challenging (the) Content conference, which takes place on 8 and 9 October in Vienna.

The cultural framework programme in Brussels starts today with music, theatre and exhibitions.
