Männergeschichten 1/Erkek Öyküleri, a double projection, shows a man getting a shave at a barbershop in Turkey. The extensive shaving ritual contrasts with a close-up shot of a canary sitting in its cage in the salon. The seemingly ordinary scene is moreover set in relation to selections from Yilmaz Güney’s feature film Yol — The Way, which traces the fates of several men to illustrate how hopeless rebellion against traditional convention can be. The montage, which is rich in contrast and yet structured by visual correspondences, turns the elaborate act of shaving itself into a metaphor of a tradition-conscious and patriarchal society.
