Truong Tan

Born in Hanoi in 1963, Truong Tan graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Hanoi in 1989, where he subsequently worked as a lecturer until 1997. In the same year, he received a grant from the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. He gained international attention in the early 1990s with his large-scale wall paintings, which openly addressed the subject of homosexuality, and which also dealt with the contradictions of the then new Doi Moi policy. Due to his clear positions and provocations he became an "enfant terrible" – but also a role model for the young art scene in Vietnam. As one of the first Vietnamese artists he combined text and painting and presented performances. To date he has shown his works in solo exhibitions in Berlin, Paris, Sydney and Hanoi, and participated in further projects, exhibitions and biennials in Vietnam, other Asian countries and European cities like Copenhagen, Liverpool, Venice and Rotterdam. He lives and works in Paris and Hanoi today.
