Nguyen Minh Phuoc

Nguyen Minh Phuoc was born in Hanoi in 1973. He graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Hanoi in 1997, received the Philip Morris Asian Art Award as well as several grants, among others from the Ford Foundation, the Vermont Studios and the Asia Cultural Council (ACC). He worked as a lecturer at the Central Music and Art Teacher Training College Hanoi until 2000. In 2002, he participated in an artist in residence programme together with Tran Luong in Italy and the USA.
Since 1997, he frequently participates in exhibitions. He has been showing his portraits of monks in traditional costumes in front of an ever delicate, subtle, almost oneiric background at solo exhibitions in Tokyo, Berlin and Hanoi to date. Additionally, he participated in various workshops in Vietnam and several group exhibitions in Zurich, Sidney and New York, among others. In 2004, he founded Ryllega, the first self-organised gallery for experimental contemporary and non-commercial art in Hanoi. Nguyen Minh Phuoc is a member of the Intra Asia Network since 2006 and programme director of the Dong Son Today foundation since 2008, and he organised the first Open Academy in Hanoi, Hue and Saigon. He lives and works as a painter and video artist in Hanoi today.
