Nguyen Manh Hung

Nguyen Manh Hung was born in Hanoi in 1976, where he also grew up, and graduated from the University of Fine Arts in Hanoi in 2002. His work is characterised by the surrealism with which he occupied himself during his studies, as well as by his father’s occupation as a pilot in the Vietnamese army and his mother’s job as an engineer. Today he transforms his observations and experiences of everyday life in Vietnam along with its changes with complex irony into his painting. Dwelling spaces, everyday life, dreams, trade, money, but also associations of war appear in his paintings. Recently, he has increasingly dedicated himself to sculptures, installations and performance, and is also involved in experimental music.
His works have been shown at several solo exhibitions in Vietnam as well as in various international group exhibitions, for example in Japan and the USA. In 2006, he received a grant from the Omi International Arts Center in New York, and in 2007, he participated in the international exhibitions Thermocline of Art. New Asian Waves at the ZKM Karlsruhe and Un/Fair Trade. Die Kunst der Gerechtigkeit at the Neue Galerie in Graz.
