SOAVINA RAMAROSON Soavina Ramaroson took his first photos during a study on the urban structures of Antananarivo – Madagascar’s capital and his home town. Later those pictures would be the core of the series "vis-à-vie". As the title already suggests, not only the spatial structure of the "vis-à-vis" is pointed out here, but also the life ("la vie") that takes place in this face-off. The photographer combines the pictures - in black and white as well as in colour - with Madagascan proverbs, which convey a further aspect of Madagascar’s culture and mentality. The images give often a contradictory impression. They mix sociological, urban and architectural observations and describe the daily confrontation of different buildings, residents and forms of life. Soavina Ramaroson was born in 1977 in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Today he lives and works in Paris. He has devoted himself to architecture, seeing in this field the possibility to contribute to a general improvement of life circumstances. He approached photography by working as architect, when he first used the camera for a project in a urban study. In this context he also realised the work "vis-à-vie". Today Soavina Ramaroson continues to work as architect. However, he has also achieved remarkable successes as photographer and his photos have been shown in several exhibitions.
