Reza Abedini is one of the key figures who helped pave the way for contemporary graphic design in today’s Iran. In his work he combines colour and form, line and plane, font and image to form bold designs that are also highly poetic. The exhibition presents a selection of Abedini’s posters, book covers and layouts. The special highlight, however, is that everything else pertaining to the show – invitation card, poster, accompanying booklet as well as the exhibition design – have been especially created by Reza Abedini for ifa-Galerie Stuttgart.

In its austerity and clarity Abedini’s visual vocabulary is the result of his competent handling of the Persian script in combination with photography or drawing and the effective use of a reduced but strong range of colours. His posters, programmes or invitation cards for Iranian cultural institutions, his books and book covers are indebted to both the literary and visual traditions of Persia as well as to the international history of expressive graphic design. They communicate their content and message effectively and are representative of a contemporary and international visual language with a social, cultural and aesthetic impact.

Reza Abedini, born in Tehran in 1967, teaches graphic design and visual communication at Tehran University. In 2006 he published “New Visual Culture of Iran” together with Hans Wolbers and he received the Prince Claus Award of the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development in Amsterdam. Abedini’s designs are more then just about communication of information, they also serve to connect different cultures in an unusual and outstanding way.
