Southeast-Europe Association (SOG)

Purpose/Activities

The Southeast-Europe Society (SOG) is an independent, public benefit intermediary organisation specialised in Southeast-Europe Research with a focus on political consulting and policy advice services.

Partner countries of the SOG are: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey.

SOG's objectives are:

  • to further the scientific, economic and cultural relations
  • to South Eastern European countries 
  • to deepen knowledge of historical and current developments in the region

SOG's fields of work are:

  • organising national and international high level conferences, workshops and lectures on political, societal, cultural and historical issues of the Southeast European countries and regions
  • staging the International University Weeks for young academics from South East Europe and Germany on annually alternating topics
  • granting the Fritz and Helga Exner-Scholarships for short-term research journeys to South East Europe and Germany respectively to young academics from Germany and South East Europe
  • granting the Fritz and Helga Exner-Promotion Awards for outstanding achievements in the field of South East Europe research
  • awarding the Rudolf-Vogel-Medal to journalists specialised in South East Europe
  • awarding the Konstantin-Jirecek-Medal for excellent achievements in South East Europe research and the promotion of cultural relations between South East Europe and Germany
