German Historical Institute Warsaw (DHI Warschau)

Purpose/Activities

The German Historical Institute Warsaw is an independent research institution and mandated by the Max Weber Foundation – German Institutes of Humanities Abroad. It does research on German-Polish relations and runs comparative studies especially in the fields of sociology as well as the history and historiography of Poland and Germany.

Activities in detail:

  • organising expert conferences and research projects
  • granting student and research scholarships
  • giving information and organising scientific exchanges, mainly between Poland and Germany, but also with scientific institutions in other countries

In addition, the institute publishes research findings, source material on Polish-German relations and historical analyses in German and/or Polish (translations). Once a year it publishes the 'Bulletin'.

The Institute's reference library contains 75.000 books and 315 journals on the subjects of German and Polish history and German-Polish relations. The library also collects titles on Jewish history and overview publications.
