Frankfurter Buchmesse - Ausstellungs- und Messe-GmbH des Börsenvereins des Deutschen Buchhandels

Purposes/Activities

The world-renowned Frankfurt Book Fair, held annually in October, is organised by a subsidiary company of the German Publishers & Booksellers Association. Its tradition spans more than 500 years, beginning soon after Johannes Gutenberg invented printing in movable letters in nearby Mainz. Today, the Frankfurt Book Fair is the world’s largest trade fair for books.

In addition to the organisation of this event, the company also offers year-round services:

  • online book trade information and continually updated databases
  • a worldwide presence on book markets

The Frankfurt Book Fair is also interested in networking and in the promotion of international exchanges, which is why it organises and finances numerous development and training programmes for most target groups, including young professionals in the field:

  • Frankfurt Book Fair fellowship programme
  • Invitation programme for publishers
  • German-French internship exchange for young booksellers and management assistants in publishing
  • Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt literary translation programme
  • Translation funding
  • International seminar for booksellers
  • Workshops for publishers and booksellers in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Funding programme for books
  • Educational tours for publishers of children's books from Islamic countries

The Frankfurt Book Fair contributes contents and financial aid to various cultural programmes. Supporting the City of Frankfurt’s part in the „Cities of Refuge“ network, the Frankfurt Book Fair takes an uncompromising stand in favour of persecuted writers.
