Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)

Purpose/Activities

The BMBF is one of the federal agencies which takes care of foreign cultural and educational policy and, in particular, of German students and graduates going abroad for further studies, scientific exchanges and international scientific and technological cooperation.

The aims are among:

  • education, research, innovation – shaping our future
  • making Germany strong – economically, socially and ecologically
  • promoting and challenging talent – realizing equal opportunities
  • modernizing education and research structures – securing quality in international competition
  • promoting technologies for new markets – creating jobs with a future
  • research for people and the environment – shaping a future which is truly worth living
  • strengthening centres of growth – moving eastern Germany ahead by means of education, research and innovation

The tasks of the BMBF includes:

  • policy and coordination tasks as well as legislation on non-school initial and continuing vocational training
  • regulation of general policy in the higher education sector
  • educational planning and the promotion of research (in conjunction with the Länder)
  • the extension and construction of institutions of higher education, including teaching hospitals (in conjunction with the Länder)
  • legislation on training assistance and the funding thereof (in conjunction with the Länder)
  • the promotion of gifted school students, trainees and students and the fostering of young scientific talent
  • the promotion of international exchanges of trainees, students, persons taking part in continuing education, instructors as well as scientists

The BMBF supports research through:

  • the promotion of basic research and the respective organizations working in this field (in conjunction with the Länder)
  • the promotion of key technologies particularly in the fields of health research, biotechnology, information technology, ecological research and mobility, research and development for employment and innovative work, transport and aerospace, and marine technology
  • the promotion of state preventive research in the fields of the environment, climate, ecology and health, the promotion of marine and polar research, research and development to improve working conditions, research into education and training, and research in the field of the humanities and the social sciences.
