Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

Purpose/Activities

The development policy of the Federal Republic of Germany is an independent area of German foreign policy. It is formulated by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and carried out by the implementing organisations. The aim of German development policy is

  • to reduce poverty worldwide
  • to build peace
  • to promote equitable forms of globalisation.

German development policy takes its cue here from the shared goals of the international community.

Its activities are

  • cooperation with civil society forces, including NGOs and political foundations
  • basic policy work with the partner countries - the policy dialogue and the shaping bilateral cooperation
  • coordination and integration of all development-policy measures
  • steering and monitoring for all financial and technical cooperation projects and programmes with individual countries
  • cooperation with international organisations and for donor coordination

The BMZ does not carry out the specific projects and programmes itself, but commissions independent organisations/institutions such as
