Public information and public relations work carried out by the German Foreign Office is an important instrument of German foreign policy. This work is aimed at – among other things – international crisis prevention, strengthening civil society and human rights. The ifa is involved in helping to develop balanced, professional and objective reporting in the media in a range of countries abroad. In this context, ifa is organising German Arab media dialogues that take place alternately in Arab countries and in Germany, although the dialogue has now also been extended to, for example, Turkey, Iran and countries in Central Asia. The issues of stereotypes and prejudices were dealt with early on in the dialogue; the discussion now focuses on subjects like the social and legal position of women, cultural globalisation, young people and political participation, as well as tolerance and freedom of opinion. The subjects discussed in the media dialogues are at times followed up on with media study tours at the end of some of the conferences.
The conferences are organised on behalf of the Federal Foreign Office.
